Utterly Delightful
Helen and Derek were charming and very welcoming indeed. They provided us with tea as soon as we walked through the door and during our stay armed us with a wealth of local information, including a rundown of all the local attractions and gave us an insight into the culture. The lounge at Wild Heather is packed full of books and maps including photo journals of Orkney life and histories of the fascinating war-time usage of the area.

Our time on Hoy included walking to the Old Man of Hoy, the Martello tower, the Dwarfie Stane (rock-cut tomb), the lonely grave and Scapa Flow.

The position of the accommodation is right by the waters edge, literally a few meters away overlooking the bay and Scapa Flow, with the lights from the ferries going past at night. All rooms are extremely comfortable with, easily controllable under floor heating, a large variety of towels neatly wrapped and presented, generous tea and coffee making facilities, excellent hot showers and large well sprung beds. Great views from the rooms.

Food was perfect with large portions of very well prepared local produce. Our meals were delicious and included local salmon (huge chucks), kippers and eggs and many vegetables from the garden. Breakfast includes a selection from a very large list. We didn't need to eat again that day!

We loved staying there and couldn't recommend Wild Heather highly enough.

We will be back!!!

What a gem
What a lovely welcome on arrival to this absolute gem of a B&B! And this was how it was throughout our stay. The rooms were utterly delightful with thoughtful touches, clean and homely. Delicious local fare was offered, as we had requested, and included salmon from Westray and vegetables from their garden. You wouldn't guess that there is no supermarket or easy convenience store nearby. We could see, as the rooms all had lovely views, the surrounding water and hills. Had we had more time we could have relaxed outside in this quiet and beautiful area. Information of the sights and attractions was readily given by Derek and I will certainly recommend this comfortable and high standard B&B to others and would like to return again in the future. “Wondeful welcoming and relaxing stay.”
This was my third stay with Helen and Derek at the Wild Heather B&B. Every time I have stayed here I have had a wonderful stay which has always left me with a desire to return.

The accomodation was lovely, very clean with little welcoming touches which made you feel special. The room had amazing panoramic views of the bay with the option of watching wonderful sunrises or sunsets. The conservatory was also an added bonus as it gave a private place to sit and to eat in unlike other places I've stayed where the dining and lounge areas were shared.

The location of the house is also wonderful and it was great to watch the scenery, widlife and particularly the seals which could pop up at any time.

Helen asked me before arriving if I had any dietry restrictions or if there was any foods I disliked. I found her cooking to be excellent with a varied menu every night which was cooked well and was delicious. On all three visits I have made over the past 18 months I have also really appreciated Helen's great baking (I particularly like her lemon cake and my husband says her coffee and walnut cake is to die for). I also enjoyed the breakfasts with gave a good choice including eggs from their own free range hens and great local produce.

I feel that Helen and Derek don't just offer good value for money but have created a very welcoming, comfortable and reviving environment. I will certainly return again in the future and would recommend their B&B to everyone (and do).
