Country Code of ConductWhilst enjoying your walks around Fair Isle, please abide by the following Country Code:PLEASE:Use stiles and gates where possible rather than fences, even if a detour is necessary. Leave gates as you found them. Do not climb over stone dykes.
Do not step through crops or between crops as you may cause damage.
Give sheep and other farm animals on tether a wide berth.
Do not enter gardens or outbuildings - it is not nessary.
Respect people's privacy as well as their property.
Bring your litter home with you or use the waste bin provided at the shop.
Do not pick wild flowers or lichens.
Do not trap or handle birds in the heligoland traps and please stand clear of the catching boxes if a bird is trapped. If concerned please notify a member of the Bird Observatory staff.
Do not disturb ground nesting birds.
Please avoid all fields with long grass, as these are being grown for hay and silage, as well as areas set aside for breeding Corncrakes.
PROVIDED VISITORS COMPLY WITH THE ABOVE AND GENERAL COUNTRY CODE, MOST CROFTERS DO NOT MIND YOU CROSSING THEIR LAND.
REMEMBER...Access may be withdrawn from any croft at any time. Please do your best to maintain good relations between visitors and islanders.
Folk on Fair Isle are very friendly so do wave or pass the time of day.
SAFETY
Please remember that the cliffs around Fair Isle are very dangerous. there are many 'over hangs' which are very crumbly and could give way at any time. The grass edges, especially when wet, are extremely slippery and should be avoided at all times. Please wear suitable footwear whilst walking off the road to prevent any injury. Any persons using stiles, bridges or gates which are the property of Schoolton , other crofters, NTS or FIBOT do so at their own risk.
